The antimicrobial efficacy of 119 mouthrinses on the synergistic reduction of supra- and subgingival microorganisms (actinomyces, streptococci, lactobacilli, periopathogens, S. aureus, E. faecalis and C. albicans) was determined in vitro. The agar diffusion assay was performed. The mouth rinses contained Chlorhexidine (CHX, n = 31), Cetylpyridiniumchloride (CPC, n = 34), Fluoride (F, n = 30) or „other“ ingredients (n = 25). NaCl and CHX (1 %) served as controls. In general, the microbes were inhibited in the following order by CHX (diameter of inhibition zones in mm = DIZ: 29.5–16.4), CPC (DIZ: 19.2–11.7), F (DIZ: 17.1–11.7), and by „other ingredients“ (IZ: 17.7–12.5). In concordance with results of other authors mouth rinses with CHX produced significantly larger inhibition zones in comparison with other mouth rinses.
