This appealing, amusing and amazing book is unique. Thirty-seven remedies are presented as case studies of individual composites of patients, as very readable and memorable short stories. Each is an explanation of healing from problems arising out of a “toxic” relationship, be it with a boss, a parent, a lover, a friend, or even a spiritual relationship with God or a ghost. The tales are endearing and realistic and will provide a terrific introduction to a first time patient or an informative and charming summary to a student or practitioner of homeopathy. Of course the consequences and concomitants of the emotional issues are physical so that there is also a summary of the potential healing powers of each remedy on the physical plane, and a summary of the main essence of each remedy.

Ruta is an interesting example. It was recently presented in another book, The Banerji Protocols, as a possible curative treatment for cancer of the brain – referenced here. The essence of the remedy is presented as betrayal, leading to a bruised pain, and affecting the periosteum, soft tissue, eyes and bowel. We are taken beyond first aid into the tale of a healer betrayed by her disciple who stole her work during her absence.

The fictionalised account of a young man with severe cystic acne is brilliant. His sister has described the religious background, the seizures, and the lack of confidence and the guilt before he is brought in to see the homeopath, where he sits silently wringing his hands. At a mention of God he shakes his head. A straightforward materia medica presentation would not convey the same depths of feeling, insight and understanding as this vignette to which I cannot do justice in a brief review. The author could have become a short story writer as well as a healer. In case you have not guessed we are discussing Kali bromatum.

Jerry Kantor is an American homeopath and acupuncturist, author of the groundbreaking and interdisciplinary book: Interpreting Chronic Illness, The Convergence of Traditional Chinese Medicine Homeopathy and Biomedicine. He hopes that this new book will help spread the news of homeopathy not only to potential patients but also to psychotherapists and psychologists and counsellors, and I agree, it should appeal to them as well as to the victims of “toxic relationships”. There is a wide range of remedies from old polychrests like Lycopodium, new provings like Positronium and lesser remedies like Cenchris contortix. I look forward to the sequel.
