Hintergrund

Etwa jeder 5. Hirninfarkt entsteht auf dem Boden einer atherosklerotisch bedingten Karotisstenose, dies entspricht jährlich mehr als 30 000 Schlaganfällen in Deutschland [1]. Unmittelbar nach der ersten Symptomatik ist das Risiko eines weiteren thrombembolischen Ereignisses exponenziell erhöht. Zur Sekundärprävention ist eine umgehende effektive Behandlung erforderlich.
