Summary

Acute gastroenteritis due rotavirus infection is among the most frequent diseases in early childhood and may lead to dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, hospitalisation and rarely to lasting damage or death. Normal measures of hygiene cannot regularly prevent transmission and nosocomial infections occur frequently. In other European countries and a few German lands 2 live vaccines against rotavirus have been found to be effecatious and safe. Among 100,000 vaccinees 1 additional intussusception might occur. The vaccination is recommended for all German infants during the first 6 months of life since August 2013.
