The clinical data of patients at the Medical School of Hannover is collected in a central patient data base by the Medical System Hannover. A 9-digit »ID-number« is used to identify each patient.

At the end of the year 1978 the data base contained data of 137,474 patients and 5.1% of the new admissions in the year 1978 hit upon a previously issued ID-number.

The selectivity of the ID-number is presented according to empirical frequency distributions of the ID-number’s components and it is evaluated with the aid of information theory.

A method, derived from occupancy theory, for quantitively estimating the ID-number multiples depending on the number of patients and considering the frequency distributions of the individual IDnumber components is presented and successfully proven.
