    Aims:

Colonoscopy services must ensure the implementation of quality assesment and improvement programs from patients' perspective. The aim of this study was to design and validate a specific questionnaire for patients undergoing colonoscopy within the colorectal cancer (CRC) program, the Colonoscopy Satisfaction and Safety Questionnaire based on Patient experience (CSSQP).

    Methods:

Questionnaire design and development was carried out in three phases: 1) review of available evidence in order to inform the questionnaire guide; 2) focus group phase with participation of physicians, nurses and patients, with the objective of exploring the dimensions of quality and safety relevant for patients to produce the instrument; 3) validation of the questionnaire by patients who had undergone a colonoscopy within the CRC screening program, in order to test the instrument and determine its metric properties.

    Results:

Of the 505 questionnaires distributed, 378 (74,85%) were return. The CSSQP version 1 consist of 18 items. The principal components analysis of the satisfaction items isolated three factors with saturation of elements above 0.52 and with high internal consistency: Information (5 items; Cronbach's alpha 0.84), Care (5 items; Cronbach's alpha 0.80) and Service and Facilities features (3 items; Cronbach's alpha 0.74). The analysis of the safety items isolated two factors with element saturations above 0.58: Information (3 items; Cronbach's alpha 0.43) and incidents and complications (3 items; Cronbach's alpha 0.53).

    Conclusions:

The CSSQP is a tool developed from the patients perspectives that is valid, reliable and replicable for measuring satisfaction and safety of patients who have undergone a colonoscopy for CRC screening.
