Das Dissoziationskonzept des 19. Jahrhunderts ist unter dem Einfluss des Konversionsmodells lange in Vergessenheit geraten, um dann durch die Traumaforschung eine Renaissance zu erleben. Diese Begriffsgeschichte erklärt auch die unterschiedlichen Definitionen im DSM- und ICD-System. Heute kann Dissoziation im Sinne nicht bewusster oder nicht integrierter mentaler Module als verändertes Bewusstsein mit Entfremdung von Selbst und Umwelt und als Abwehrmechanismus verstanden werden.
