Abstract

Retention after orthodontic treatment is necessary to prevent relapse of the treatment outcome. Relapse can appear as a result of forces from the periodontal fibres, which tend to move the teeth back into their pretreatment positions or due to deflecting occlusal contacts, if the final occlusion is not ideal. Undesirable movements of the teeth also happen through physiological changes during aging, like dentofacial growth, which also affects the position of the teeth.
