ABSTRACT

The ileoanal pouch procedure has been a surgical option for patients with ulcerative colitis and familial adenomatous polyposis for the last 20 years. Over this period, the operation has evolved, and technical modifications and refinements have improved the long-term outcome of the procedure while ensuring good continence and an acceptable number of daily bowel movements. This article reviews the technical performance of the ileoanal pouch procedure with emphasis on pouch construction and the technique of ileoanal anastomosis (mucosectomy and hand-sewn anastomosis vs. double-staple technique).
