Introduction

One of the most frequent and troublesome complications in the treatment using external fixation is the occurrence of pin track infections [1] [2] [7] [8]. There are experimental and clinical observations suggesting a superior bone-pin interface and a lower rate of pin track related infections using hydroxyapatite (HA) coated pins [3] [4] [5]. Since HA-coated pins are considerably more expensive in manufacture compared to steel pins, we look critically for clinical advantages to justify a general recommendation for their use. The goal of this study was to evaluate the severity and frequency of pin-related infections and the bonding of the bone pin interface using dynamic axial external fixation in the lower limb.
