Trifluoromethanesulfonic acid-coated silica in the absence of
solvents is an effective reagent for hydrolysis of sterically crowded
chiral esters giving chiral acids in good chemical and optical yield.
On the other hand, the method was unsuitable for the separation
of optically pure alcohols from chiral esters because dehydration
usually takes place during the reaction course.
