Summary

In 35 one-root recently extracted human teeth an in-vitro study was performed in order to evaluate the reliability of the electronic apex locators Foramatron IV, Root ZX and Justy II to detect root perforations in dry root canals, in presence of NaCl and of NaOCl (3 experimental groups). The perforation was made in the middle third of the root using a hard metal drill. The electrods of the apex locators were in contact with conductive material (alginate) in a plastic container where also the study teeth were sunk. The measurements with a K-file ISO Nr. 20 followed; the file was connected with the other electrod of the apex locator and it was pushed into the root canal until the perforation's location was reached. The length measurements' percentages with an intervall of ± 0,5 mm were in the dry root canals 86 % for the Foramatron IV, 91 % for the Root-ZX and 83 % for the Justy II. When NaCl was present these percentages were 26 %, 91 % and 89 % respectively. In presence of NaOCl they were 0 %, 91 % and 86 % respectively.
