I wish to thank Dr. Alfonso Barrera for serving as guest editor and the group of authors he has chosen to write articles on the topic of “Hair Restoration: State of the Art” for Seminars in Plastic Surgery. Dr. Barrera has been a contributor and innovator in the field of plastic surgery and has given a significant degree of credibility to hair restoration, particularly “hair transplantation” and the use of “follicular unit micrografts and minigrafts” in the reconstruction of the face and scalp.

Dr. Barrera is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine and has been in private practice in Houston, Texas since 1983. Dr. Barrera specializes in aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery and hair transplantation.

He obtained his medical degree from the University of Monterrey in 1978 and subsequently completed 7 years of postgraduate surgical training at the following institutions: General Surgery at Methodist Hospital in Dallas; Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Harvard Medical School in Boston; and St. Joseph's Hospital in Houston, Texas (where he received his plastic surgery training). Dr. Barrera is Board certified in plastic surgery and otolaryngology and holds a Certificate of Proficiency in Microvascular Surgery.

Dr. Barrera is a past president of the Houston Society of Plastic Surgeons and is a member of numerous scientific societies; he has written articles in national journals and textbooks on the subject of plastic surgery.
