Summary

Depending on the localization, severity and duration, inflammation can have a detrimental effect on the supply of vital micronutrients to the organism. Inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract and its associated glands, the liver and pancreas, often causes malassimilation of nutrients. Inflammatory processes outside of the gastrointestinal tract though may also have the same effect. Acute-phase inflammatory reactions affect the metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and micronutrients. There is a close interrelation between inflammation and specific diet-relevant biomarkers found in plasma. Even a clinically inapparent inflammation will cause marked decrease in the concentration of retinol, alpha-tocopherol and carotenoids. Long-term expositions of the body to chronic inflammatory processes can detrimentally affect the supply of micronutrients to certain body tissues so that in such cases the application of supplements should be duly considered.
