Summary

The article sets out to describe basic requirements for a psychosomatic approach: relating to our psychological interpretation of manual diagnosis, indi-cating how to distinguish between somatic expression and psychological experience, between symptoms and symbols; to emphasize the significance of the therapist's ”holding ability and to increase his/her awareness of counter-transference; reflecting the process of constructing truth and reality in the therapeutic setting.
