Abstract
Background: Prevalence and incidence of dementias are constantly increasing. Reports in the literature concerning the positive influence of physical activity on cognitive performance and the development of dementias including Alzheimer’s disease among older people are inconclusive.
Objective: This study carried out a systematic literature review in order to clarify if physical activity influences the possible development of cognitive decline, dementia or Alzheimer’s disease in people over 60 years of age.
Method: Systematic literature review from the year 2000 forward.
Results: Nine of ten analysed studies showed a strong inverse relationship between regular physical activity and the development of cognitive impairments, dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. One study which failed to find such evidence was the only to analyse adjustments for risk (e. g. depression, cardiovascular disease) and protective factors (cognitive activities) for cognitive decline.
Conclusions: Regular physical activity has positive influence on cognitive decline in older people. However, in regard to additional risk and protective factors for dementia physical activity alone did not show this protective effect.
