ABSTRACT

Tumor-specific immediate reconstruction can be defined as coupled surgery consisting of resection and immediately following with reconstruction in cases of both partial and total mastectomy. This coupled technique differs from conventional forms of immediate reconstruction in that “uncoupling” is not possible. Thus, the plastic-surgical component involving the entrance to the tumor bed, skin pattern, volume of resection, and volume of skin replacement has been integrated from the very beginning into the whole surgical planning. The indication for coupled surgery is based on anatomiconcologic criteria and problems such as relative size, unfavorable site, or technical operability.
