Die Bedeutung des Schlafes ist gut dokumentiert, z. B. durch die Tatsache, dass Schlafentzug bei Nagetieren und Fliegen schneller zum Tod führt als Nahrungsentzug. Schlaf scheint wichtig zu sein für die neuronale Erholung, die synaptische Homöostase und die Plastizität des Gehirns. Schlafstörungen sollten in der klinischen Praxis daher sehr ernst genommen werden.
