A descriptive model of medical information processing is presented. The model, consisting of multiple inter-regulated functional systems, transcends traditional organizational boundaries in support of patient care, professional education, and research. Relation of the model both to previously proposed medical models and to general communication models is discussed. Use of the functional model in delineating the scope of a medical information system, defining user requirements, and providing a substructure for detailed system design is expected to encourage standardized, parallel, modular design of application programs, with resultant decrease of program complexity, cost, and development time.

Ein Modell für die Verarbeitimg von medizinischer Information wird beschrieben. Das aus mehreren verwandten Systemen zusammengesetzte Modell überschreitet im Interesse der Unterstützung von Krankenbehandlung, klinischer Ausbildung und Forschung traditionelle organisatorische Grenzen. Das Modell wird mit früheren Modellen für che Krankenpflege und clie allgemeine Informationsvermittlung verglichen. Die Autoren erwarten, daß die Benutzung dieses theoretischen Vorbildes zur Beschreibung des Umfanges eines medizinischen Informationssystems zur Definition von Benutzerbeclürfnissen und als Grundlage für die detaillierte Systemplanung nützlich ist, den Entwurf von standardisierten, modularen Anwendungsprogrammen forciert unci Programm-Komplexität, Kosten und Entwicklungszeit vermindert.
