Dr. Rishi Batra is a board-certified staff colon and rectal surgeon and Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE. Rishi is a first-generation Indian-American and lived in North Carolina until age 10. He then moved to Nebraska, where he ultimately completed his undergraduate at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln—majoring in Biochemistry and Biology. He went on to complete his medical school and his General Surgery Residency at the University of Nebraska, prior to completing his Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic. During this time, he was also able to achieve a Masters in Healthcare Management/Business Administration at the University of Nebraska, Omaha. He is a busy clinical surgeon and enjoys treating all aspects of colorectal pathologies and especially enjoys endoscopy for IBD and colon and rectal cancer.
Rishi also works closely with medical students and surgical residents and thoroughly enjoys training the next generation of medical professionals. He also remains active in the College of Medicine on the Admission Committee and as a Core Faculty Member for M3 surgical clerkship. In 2024, he received the Medical Student Faculty Educator of the Year Award.
His research interests have spanned all aspects of colorectal surgery, including several publications in translational and basic science. He remains a productive researcher, with over 20 articles and book chapters to his credit and has been an invited lecturer to many conferences.
He and his wife, Courteny—a nurse practitioner—have two sons. They enjoy spending time together, together with his parents Surinder and Sunita Batra, as well as running, watching Husker Sports, skiing, and traveling.
