Abstract

Myocardial infarction (MI) as an acute and life threatening complication of coronary heart disease is one of the most frequent causes of death in Germany and thus is of great clinical relevance. Diagnostic criteria have been defined in a consensus document „Universal Definition of Myocardial Infarction”, which has been published at the end of 2007. Here, cardiac markers, namely cardiac troponins, play a central role as a criterion for the diagnosis of myocardial infarction in conjunction with clinical signs, ECG changes or specific findings in non invasive imaging. Furthermore, this current definition provides unequivocal criteria for the diagnosis of myocardial infarction after therapeutic procedures (PCI and CABG).
