Significance

Fluorine’s small size and strong electronic effects make it an important building block in the design of organic electronic materials. The fluorinated polymer reported in this contribution shows a decreased band gap relative to poly(dioctylfluorene) (octyl groups in place of the F groups). The authors show that the fluorine groups do not significantly move the HOMO levels but lower the LUMO states by nearly 0.6 V.
