Significance

A new synthesis of tertiary alkyl amines starting from lactams or amides by using Tf2O and Grignard reagents has been developed. The intermediate iminium ion is efficiently trapped by two different nucleophiles and the presented products of this one-pot procedure can be isolated in good to excellent yields.
