Significance

Construction of supramolecular systems containing anthracene units in a well-defined order is of particular importance to chemists because of their potential photochemical properties towards photofunctional materials and devices. Here the authors developed a synthetic route for macrocycle 1. Its amphilicity and lack of conformational freedom enable two-dimensional monolayer assembly at an air/water interface.
