Significance

The authors reported the synthesis and characterization of novel D-A-type copolymers that consist of a heptacyclic donor and 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole as an acceptor. The core structure of the ladder-type monomer can be efficiently assembled by Brønsted acid mediated intramolecular Friedel-Crafts cyclization. It is noteworthy that the synthesized polymers show good solubility to common organic solvents, lower band gaps than those of corresponding non-fused polymers, and high hole mobilities. Furthermore, the authors demonstrated the validity of the polymers by fabricating bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells, which exhibit high power conversion efficiencies (PCE) of 2.8% for P1 and 3.7% for P2, respectively.
