Significance

Neodysiherbaine A is an amino acid isolated from the Dysidea herbacea Micronesian sponge. It is a convulsant and an agonist for KA and AMPA glutamate receptors. Previous syntheses have involved inversion of hydroxyl groups on the sugar moiety, which is avoided here by starting from commercially available β-d-ribose tetraacetate.
