Selbstmedikation und Apotheke – für eine wirksame, effiziente und wohnortnahe Patientenversorgung

Zusammenfassung

Die Selbstmedikation mit rezeptfreien Arzneimitteln bildet zusammen mit Apotheken in Deutschland einen festen Bestandteil der Gesundheitsversorgung. Die Beratung in der Apotheke vor Ort ermöglicht Patienten eine selbstbestimmte, verantwortungsvolle, und dennoch sichere Therapie mit sogenannten OTC-Arzneimitteln (engl. over the counter‚ über die Ladentheke verkauft). Denn bei leichteren Erkrankungen und Befindlichkeitsstörungen ist nicht immer ein Arztkontakt notwendig. Für die Apotheke bietet die Selbstmedikation eine Chance zur heilberuflichen, aber auch ökonomischen Profilierung. Der Apotheker agiert hier als (Erst-) Versorger, aber auch als Lotse in einem immer komplexer werdenden Gesundheitssystem. Für das Gesundheitssystem bildet die Selbstmedikation eine effiziente Alternative bzw. Ergänzung zur ärztlichen Versorgung mit einer erheblichen Entlastung für Krankenversicherungen und Volkswirtschaft.

Abstract

Self-medication with prescription-free medicines and pharmacies form an essential part of the health care system in Germany. Counseling in the local pharmacy allows patients to receive a self-determined, responsible, yet safe therapy with OTC (over-the-counter medicines). For lighter illnesses and disorders a doctor's appointment is not always necessary. For the pharmacy, self-medication offers an opportunity for therapeutic as well as economic profiling. The pharmacist acts as a (primary) provider, but also as a gatekeeper in an increasingly complex health system. For the health system self-medication is an efficient alternative or supplement to medical care with a considerable relief for health insurance and the national economy.
