This system represents one of the few asymmetric conjugate addition reactions of alkynes and has the advantage of proceeding in aqueous conditions. The use of Meldrum’s acid as the acceptor is crucial for this reaction. The products are useful compounds as precursors to important molecules of pharmacological activity.
