Significance

Keto esters are attractive intermediates for the synthesis of various important products. The proposed method allows a simple homologation of readily available β-keto esters to form the corresponding γ-keto esters. It also affords a route for ring-expansion reactions allowing the synthesis of functionalized medium and large size rings.
