Significance

Organocatalytic diastereo- and enantioselective synthesis of 1,2-annulated dihydroisoquinolines and 1,2-dihydrophthalazines is reported. Of the chiral pyrrolidines tested for this reaction as catalysts, (S,S)-2,5-dibenzylpyrolidine was shown to provide products in high yields and with highest enantioselectivities for a series of seven substrates. The proposed catalytic cycle is consistent with the observed enantioinduction.
