Significance

(S)-1-Amino-5-phosphonoindan-1-carboxylic acid [(S)-APICA] antagonises metabotropic glutamate receptors implicated in various neurodegenerative diseases. The α-amination of aldehyde B in the short synthesis of (S)-APICA outlined above is another triumph for proline organocatalysis.
