Zwitterionic Chromophores for Nonlinear Optics

Significance

Chromophore 1 is comprised of a neutral component (A) and a zwitterionic component (B) tethered together with a flexible linker. It was synthesized and characterized by 1H NMR and Hyper-Rayleigh scattering. The ground-state dipole moments of the individual components were shown to align in an antiparallel (subtractive) fashion whereas the first-order hyperpolarizabilities (β) of the individual chromophores were shown to couple additively, thus making 1 an ideal candidate for an organic non-linear optical (NLO) material.
