Significance

A facile and versatile method for the chemoselective acylal formation of aldehydes by using a heteropolyacid-functionalized silica catalyst (SiPW-8 1) was developed. Thus, the acylal formation of benzaldehyde was carried out under solvent-free conditions with 1 and Ac2O (2 mol equiv) to give the corresponding acylal in 95% yield. Catalyst 1 was reused without loss of catalytic activity [96% (2nd use of 1); 95% (3nd use of 1), 94% (4th use of 1)]. The acylal formation of various aldehydes by using 1 was also demonstrated (11 examples, 89-98% yield).
