Significance
Chemical modification of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with poly(amido-amine) dendrons (PAMAM) has been achieved. This was done by first treating the MWCNTs with nitric acid to give surface carboxyl groups. Conversion to the acid chloride, followed by the linking of PAMAM dendrons via esterification reactions, afforded the desired target. Further treatment with Ag(I) and reduction with formaldehyde led to PAMAM-MWCNT hybrid materials containing Ag(0) particles trapped within the surface dendrons.
