Significance

This paper describes the relatively rigorous optimization for the copper-catalyzed conjugate addition of diethylzinc to α,β-unsaturated imines. A variety of BINOL-type and TADDOL-type phosphoramidite ligands were tested with 1 giving the highest ee values in the initial screening. Toluene proved to be the best solvent and Cu(MeCN)4PF6 was the best copper source.
