Significance

Secondary alcohols are oxidized via a NHC-Pd complex with molecular oxygen as the terminal oxidant. Axially chiral BINAM-type ligands were used. Good to high enantioselectivities were obtained under kinetic resolution conditions. Aryl-alkyl racemic alcohols were used as starting materials and many gave ee values >85% with some selectivities extending to >99%.
