Significance

2-Substituted pyridines are useful precursors for the synthesis of pharmacologically active compounds and perspective materials. The authors reported herein a general, high-yielding and operationally simple method for the synthesis of 2-alkyl, -aryl and -alkynyl pyridines starting from the corresponding pyridine N-oxides and Grignard reagents. The reaction is highly regioselective and allows also a direct preparation of unsymmetrical 2,6-disubstituted pyridines.
