Significance

The authors report the first asymmetric rhodium-catalyzed intermolecular hydroacylation reaction. It is found that monodentate phosphine ligands give endo products while bidentate phosphine give exo products selectively. Interestingly, even the minor exo isomers obtained from monodentate ligands are formed in consistently higher ee values than the corresponding endo isomers.
