Significance

The Tanaka group describes the catalytic asymmetric synthesis of axially chiral biaryl phosphine compounds. Use of Rh with the H8-BINAP ligand produces the products in extremely high yields with exceptionally high ee values. The reaction is performed in dichloromethane at room temperature and is complete after one hour. Tetra-ortho-substituted biaryl compounds are generated in this reaction.
