Template Synthesis of a 90-Membered Macrocycle

Significance

Ko and co-workers reported a facile synthesis of 90-membered macrocycle 4 by using hexaplatinum species based template 2, which is easily prepared from compound 1, a product of oxidative addition between Pt(PEt3)4 and hexakis(4-iodophenyl)hexaphenylbenzene. Olefin metathesis of 2 was performed in high dilution to suppress intermolecular reactions. Detachment of the resulting macrocycle from the template was achieved by treating 3 with aqueous NaI solution and a free macrocycle 4 was obtained after hydrogenolysis.
