Significance

The benzophenone unit is encountered in various biologically relevant molecules. This reaction offers a simple and versatile process for the preparation of functionalized benzophenones, starting from aryl or hetaryl aldehydes and arylboronic acids. It avoids the regioselectivity and functional group compatibility problems, associated with the conventional Friedel-Crafts reaction or the application of highly reactive organometallic species.
