Significance

The reaction of chitosan beads with Pd(OAc)2 gave chitosan-supported palladium(II). Then the palladium(II) in the chitosan beads was converted into palladium(0) (polymeric Pd 1) by treatment with hydrazine hydrate. The chitosan-palladium polymeric composite 1 was crosslinked by diglycidyl ether polyethylene glycol to yield catalyst 2. The Suzuki cross-coupling reaction of various aryl halides and aryl boronic acids was carried out with catalyst 2 in water under microwave-irradiation conditions to afford the corresponding biaryl compounds in 14-98% yield. The presence of tetrabutylammonium bromide accelerated the reaction.
