Significance

InI is used as activator of the pinacolyl allylborates promoting their addition to ketones. Thus, this reaction represents the first example of a catalytic activation of a group 13 element (boron) with another group 13 element in its low oxidation state (indium). This method is highly general and tolerates sensitive functionalities including nitro groups. The allylboration of ketones is also the first synthetic application of an In(I) catalyst.
