Significance

The preparation of alkenyl coupling partners of well-defined geometry like 3 is desirable due to the widespread use of metal-catalyzed cross-coupling ractions. β-Branched unsaturated compounds like 6 are usually prepared by addition of α-metallated acrylates with aldehydes, which may be prone to isomerization. The three-component approach makes use of simple reagents and leads to iodoalkenes 3 with a high level of stereocontrol.
