Significance

The rhodium-bis(oxazolinyl)phenyl complex is shown to effectively promote the direct aldol reaction yielding products in highly stereoselective fashion. The authors suggest that ‘Phebox’-Rh catalyst incorporates both Lewis acidic and Brønstead basic sites which are responsible for activation of the carbonyl group and formation of the enolate moiety.
