Abstract
In the Department of Paediatric Neurosurgery at the National Institute of Neurosurgery, Budapest, we examined the psychological and mental performance of school age children. Eighty children between the ages of 6 and 17 were examined. The method of the examination was a modified variation of the HAWIK intelligence test and we applied a Hungarian version (MAWI).
According to our results:
1. 45 go to a normal school and experience normal mental achievement.
2. 14 go to a normal school but show unstable performance.
3. 18 go to an institution for the education of the retarded, but they are suitable for special education.
4. 2 are oligophrenic.
5. 1 is not suitable for school upon reaching school age (6 years).
