Significance

A mixture of the verdazyl radical 1 and a Pd(II) complex was shown to quantitatively self-assemble to the M6L4 spin cage 2 in water. Various neutral molecules could be enclathrated by the large cavity of 2. Enclathration of small-molecule organic radicals led to energy transfer between the verdazyl radicals comprising the cage walls and the guest radical.
