Significance

A heterogeneous Lewis acid catalyst was prepared by incorporating Gd(OTf)3 onto the imidazolium-based polymer 1. 1-Gd(OTf)3 was used for Michael additions of amines to α,β-unsaturated esters (63-98%, 8 examples), thiophenol to α,β-unsaturated esters (98-99%, 2 examples) and amines to acrylonitrile (32-92%, 5 examples). The catalyst was reused twice without loss of catalytic activity (1st use = 98%, 2nd use = 92%, 3rd use = 96%) for the reaction of 2a.
