Significance

The authors report the synthesis of a set of bipyridine-containing macrocycles [7] n starting from 5,5¢-dibromo-2,2′-bipyridine 1 and the silylated benzene derivative 2. Their route involves Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling and subsequent transformation of the bistrimethylsilyl compound 3 to its acetylene analogue 6. The products of the oxidative coupling were separated via gel-permeation chromatography.
