Background

Neurotrophic keratopathy has various causes, multifaceted symptoms, and may lead to persistent corneal epithelial defects, ulceration, and perforation with consecutive partial or complete loss of vision. If conservative treatment options fail, sensory neurotization may restore protective corneal sensibility and prevent blindness [1]. This technique was first described by Samii in 1981. Various different techniques have since been developed. Here, we present the details of the first Swiss corneal neurotization using a minimally invasive technique to restore protective sensibility in a case of severe neurotrophic keratopathy.
